Personal Life & Political Career

Professor Saugata Roy (born August 6, 1946) is an Indian politician at the Trinamool Congress and the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Urban Development Manmohan Singh.

A graduate of National Science Talent Research and a former student of St. Lawrence High School in Kolkata, Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri School of Law and Kolkata College College, he has a degree in physics. He also holds a law degree from the University of Calcutta. He is a retired physics professor at Asutosh College. A senior politician in West Bengal, a Trinamool congressman, he was elected to Lok Sabha's 15th Lok Sabha Lok Sabha and re-elected to the 16th Lok Sabha of the same constituency. He was previously elected from Barrackpore (Lok Sabha District) in 1977. He was Minister of State for Petroleum at the Charan Singh Ministry and Minister of State for Urban Development at UPA II from 2009 to 2012. He was elected to the West. Legislative Assembly of Bengal five times, having been elected in the constituencies of Alipore (3 terms), Dhakuria and Bangaon.

From 1967 to 1969, he was secretary general of West Bengal in Chhatra Paris and from 1973 to 1977, secretary general of the Congress Committee of West Bengal.

On January 11, 2017, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Babul Supriyo brought an action against Justice Tapit Paul and MP Mahua Moitra for the crime of fraud in the Rose Valley.
