Om Birla (born December 4, 1962) is an Indian politician of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha of the Kota-Bundi constituency of the state of Rajasthan. He was a member three times of the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan of South Kota.
Early life
Om Birla was born on December 4, 1962, at Shrikrishna Birla and Late Shakuntala Devi. He completed his Masters in Commerce of Govt. Commerce College, Kota University and Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, Ajmer.
Political career
He has been active in student politics. He was president of the student union in 1979. For 12 years since 1991, Mr. Birla was a key leader in Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha as president at the state level, followed by holding the position of vice president at the national level.
Legislative Assembly
Om Birla wins his first election for the assembly in Kota South in 2003. He defeated Shanti Dhariwal of Congress by 10,101 votes. In the upcoming elections of the Assembly, he defended his seat with a margin of 24,300 votes for his closest candidate Ram Kishan Verma of Congress in 2008. Before becoming a member of Parliament, he won his third election of the Assembly against Pankaj Mehta (Congress ) by closure to 50,000 votes in 2013. During his term in 2003-08, he was the Parliamentary Secretary (MoS rank) in the government of Rajasthan.
Member of Parliament
He contested the 16th Lok Sabha election from the Kota-Bundi constituency and won a 2,000,782-vote victory over his closest rival Ijyaraj Singh of Congress in May 2014. The BJP swept the general elections in Rajasthan winning the 25 seats.
He is a member of the Standing Committee on Energy in Parliament, a member of the Petitions Committee and the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Philanthropic Work
In addition to being an active parliamentarian and working at the constituency level, there are several social welfare programs. Some of them include a Paridhan, which started in 2012 and involves the distribution of clothing and books for the weaker part of society, the blood donation camps.A program of free meals and a bank of medicines for the supply of necessary medicines for the poor also arrived.
Personal life
He married Dr. Amita Birla in March 1991. They have two daughters, Akansha and Anjali. Akanksha is a Certified Public Accountant (C.A) and Anjali is pursuing honors in the political sciences of the Ramjas School.
