Captain Amarinder Singh (born March 11, 1942) is an Indian politician who is currently the 26th Chief Minister of Punjab. Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Republic, he was also chairman of the Indian National Congress Commission. Previously, he was chief minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. Personal life
Singh is the son of Maharaja Yadavindra Singh and Maharani Mohinder Kaur of Patiala, belonging to the Phulkian dynasty of the descendants of Sidhu Brar. He has a son, Raninder Singh, and a daughter, Jai Inder Kaur, married to Delhi-based businessman Gurpal Singh. His wife, Preneet Kaur, was a Member of Parliament and Minister of State in the Department of External Affairs. from 2009 to 2014.
Her older sister, Heminder Kaur, is married to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, K. Natwar Singh. He is also related to Shiromani Akali Dal (A), CEO and former IPS officer Simranjit Singh Mann. Mann's wife and Amarinder Singh's wife, Preneet Kaur, are sisters.
Army career
He joined the Indian Army in June 1963 after graduating from the Academy of National Defense and the Indian Military Academy before resigning in early 1965 in the Sikh Regiment.
Political career
He was inducted into Congress by Rajiv Gandhi, his friend and child for the first time at the Lok Sabha in 1980. In 1984, he resigned from Parliament and Congress to protest the action of the army. during the Blue Star operation. In 1992, he separated from the Akali Dal group and formed a dissident group named Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic), which merged with Congress in 1998 (after the defeat of his party at Vidhan Sabha). he obtained only 856 votes) after Sonia Gandhi took control of the party. He was beaten by Professor Prem Singh Chandumajra of the constituency of Patiala in 1998 by a margin of 33,251 votes. He chaired the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee twice, from 1999 to 2002 and from 2010 to 2013, he also became Chief Minister of Punjab in 2002 and continued until 2007.

On November 27, 2015, Amarinder Singh was named president of the Punjab Congress ahead of the 2017 elections in Punjab. On March 11, 2017, the party of Congress at the head of elections to the National Assembly under his leadership.
